Getting Back Into the Gym (AD)

It’s been a while since I’ve spoken about my relationship with exercise, so it’s about time I provided you with an update!

As you may know if you’ve been a long term reader, I’ve gone through many phases of unhealthiness, constant exercise, no exercise, and around this time last year I found my feet.  I was thriving at the gym; going regularly, establishing a real routine, and most importantly, approaching it with a healthy mentality.  However, when I moved further away from the city centre in my second year, my workload increased and the closest gym cost £35 a month (?!), I had to completely switch up my exercise (post about it here). This was great, but as fun as exercise classes may be, a part of me has really missed the gym… and that left me with a dilemma.


Finding my feet at the gym

I’m a person that has always thrived on control; and the gym gives me the opportunity to take control of my own routine.  When I exercise I like to choose when, how, how long and take breaks as I deem suitable; while the classes I am taking are fun, the system is a bit too rigid for me.  I’d love to have a gym membership when I go back to London, but the issue is that, with the amount I’m going on holiday in the summer, there’s no point taking out a monthly membership when I’ll be using it so irregularly…  That’s why, when the team Esquared* contacted me and told me about their app, I was very excited to try it out.


It’s nice to be back in the gym again

Essentially, it’s an app that allows you to find classes and gyms near you, and book either 2 hour use of the gym floor, or available exercise classes, without actually being a member of the gym.  On trying it out I found that it’s incredibly simple; you select the day you want to work out, and it uses your location to show you every class and gym near you that’s offering a service, then you simply book and pay through the app.  This meant that, for the first time in almost a year I was able to go to the gym, hassle free, without taking out a membership that I know I won’t get my moneys worth.  The app itself is free, and then you pay for the classes that you want to take part in through the app.


Getting back into the groove

Not only this, but it allowed me to explore a gym 10 minutes away from me that I didn’t even know existed (and actually preferred to my usual gym!), so it was really great to try new things without the commitment.  I can already tell that Esquared is going to become a part of my summer, because it’s the perfect solution for those who want to exercise but have busy, inconsistent lives.  I managed to walk straight into the gym, show them my Esquared ticket, and use the gym for a good two hours, and leave with no commitment to come back any time soon/waste my money on a membership when I don’t know how frequently I’ll use it.  My next goal is to check out some of the exercise classes near me, because I do love the occasional class, but I feel like I’m stuck in a rut in terms of routine.

It’s great to be able to get back into going to the gym without stressing over memberships, and also being able to book classes with a simple click on an app.  If you haven’t tried Esquared, I do recommend giving them a download and checking out the app for yourself!  It’s free, so you may as well give it a browse…

    This is really cool for people who don’t go enough to the gym to make the membership worth it. I pay $25 a month to go to my gym, and typically a class here is between $10-15, and so if I go to the gym at least 3 times a month, which obviously I try to go more than that, it makes it worthwhile for me.
