It’s Sunday which means it’s time for another edition of the truth about uni collab I’m doing with a bunch of other student bloggers, in which we give our honest opinions about different aspects of University! This weeks topic is relationships, both the romantic and friendship kind…
Finding friends at Uni is incredibly daunting when you first get there and you don’t know where they’re going to come from. However, it’s important to remember that everyone’s in the same position as you, and after a few awkward ice breakers and some freshers week activities, it becomes way easier than you’d think. At the beginning of the year almost everyone you meet is welcoming and willing to make friends, and for all you know those friends could be the ones that last, however I think it’s particularly important at the beginning of the year to just go with the flow.
I made a lot of friends very quickly, everyone did, and we ended up with this incredibly massive group (around 20 people) that tended to do things together. But, as you get to know each other, you naturally grow closer to some and further away from others, and start to form more intimate, stronger friendships. I’m lucky to still be friendly with all the people from the beginning of the year, but I’d say I have around 5/6 friends that I’m super close to. People make friends all over the place, but as a joint honour student split between two courses I tended to make more friends in my University halls than in my course (however, I still have some gems in my course).
As for romantic relationships, well, I’ve mentioned before that I happen to be in a long distance relationship, something that I never thought I’d do (We didn’t start dating til we were both at different Unis… it’s a long story) and honestly it’s not as bad as you’d think it would be. We’re both a 2 hour train journey away and organising and scheduling visits makes things a lot easier than you’d think. However, there’s so much going on at University that life really doesn’t revolve around relationships… you have friends, and outings and clubs and so many different activities if you want them, so while they can be fun, relationships are definitely not a necessity. However, if you and your partner are worried about long distance when you go off to Uni, I promise it’s definitely manageable.
Lots of love,
