An Open Letter to My Sister

To my little geek,

You turn 15 today… Which I’m slightly in denial about because I still feel like I was 15 less than a year ago, so the fact that I now have a 15 year old sister makes me feel incredibly old.

I’ve always loved hanging out with you.  From when you were 3 and I was 7 and we’d put on little shows in the garden for our parents, to making brownies together nowadays (you getting annoyed because I insist on eating the batter, and me getting annoyed because I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to eat the batter…).  Being away from you at Uni has really made me realise how much I take the availability of family for granted when I live at home.  You used to be there every single day and I thought nothing of it, but it’s an incredible and it leaves me feeling so comfortable and I appreciate you (and our parents) a lot more now.

It’s weird watching this little kid (who in my mind, stopped ageing at 8) turning into a proper teenager, who cares about her clothes and goes out without parents and tells me about her friends’ boy drama.  I was always a shy kid… it took me ages to warm up to people, but I’m pretty sure (after you got over your mischievous nursery years) you were even more shy than I was growing up.  That’s why it makes me so proud to have watched you grow into this independent, free-thinking, sassy (albeit slightly too sassy at times…) individual, and I can’t wait to see where you go from here.

My years from 15-19 were incredibly transformative, but they were also incredibly hard to deal with at times.  This was the period I reached my peak of insecurity and body issues and yes, our parents are amazing at comforting us when we need it, but I hope you know that you can tell me absolutely anything you’ve done or you’re feeling, odds are I’ve already been there or done something similar.  Everything from the past 4 years is honestly a bit of a blur; time goes by so quickly and before you know it you’re turning into the “Back in my days…” cliche before your time, so make the most of all you’ve got right now!  Take thousands of pictures (you’re a budding photographer anyway), go out as much as you can with your friends, write a diary or something… Record as many memories as you can (but also try to live in the moment, no pressure).

I’m gonna cut this short because I know reading’s not your favourite thing in the world (But you’ll read this anyway because you love me… And also because it’s about you…).  But yeah, basic conclusion is I love you so much, happy birthday you (slightly less) tiny child!

Lots of love,

Jas xx

Awww, this was so lovely to read Jasmine, and happy birthday to your sister too! My brother is turning 24 on April 1st and like you, he still seems like my little brother all the time, so seeing him grow into a man is always weird but also nice too, it’s good to see him grow up into someone I’m proud of, and it sounds like you and your sister have a really lovely, close bond so this made me smile and tear up a bit too! Lovely post. – Tasha
